Il Palio

The “Palio” is held in Siena twice a year. This famous horse race takes place on July, 2nd and August, 16th and it represents a competition between the “contradas” (districts) of Siena.
This is a very traditional and historic event dating back from many years ago, and is really an event not to be missed.

Calcio in Costume

The “Calcio in costume” in Florence draws its origins from the ballplay in use in the ancient Greek and later Roman times, introduced in Florence as a military exercise.
There are three matches during the summer, one on the 24th of June, to honour San Giovanni, the Patron Saint of Florence.
A parade starts from the Church of Santa Maria Novella, beside the Duomo and ends in Piazza Santa Croce, where the match takes place.

Giostra del Saracino:

During the first weekend of September a horse tournament dating back to the 14th century takes place in Arezzo.
The evening before there is a ceremony and the announcement of the competition is made.
The following day a historical parade with 700 participants, wearing fourteenth century costumes, passes through the city streets.
